More than 150 million Americans face the pain and confusion of loss every year, and most of us have no idea how to handle it. We’re thrown into the deep end of grief without a life preserver, desperately trying to stay afloat in a sea of shock, anger, frustration, heartbreak, and hopelessness.

Mark Negley knows what it’s like to face the pain of loss and fight to build a new life from the ashes. Over the past thirty years, he has faced cancer, raised a special needs child, lost his beloved mother, nearly lost his wife in a car accident, and supported her through depression and mental health issues resulting from her brain injuries. Tragically, in 2016, Mark received the biggest blow of all when his wife of twenty years took her own life.

Frustrated by the lack of relatable resources to help navigate his grief recovery, Mark set out to redefine the loss experience. After five years of research, in-depth interviews with loss survivors, and leading grief groups, he realized that the problem isn’t how we experience grief; the problem is that the prevailing, traditional model does not work for most people. He found that grief recovery isn’t a linear progression from one clearly defined emotional response to the next; rather, it’s a series of three concentric circles—like ripples in a pond—that emanate from a center point of impact. Each of those circles contain multiple emotions to form three “interconnected” stages on the recovery journey called Survive, Alive, and Thrive.

In Survive-Alive-Thrive: Navigating the Journey from Loss to Hope to Happiness, Mark Negley takes you on a journey through his loss experiences, using his story and the stories of several others to teach his new model of grief recovery from a totally different perspective. You don’t have to walk this difficult road alone. With the help of Mark and others, you can navigate from loss to hope and then to happiness. You don’t have to settle for survival! Set your sights higher and learn how to thrive again!

“[Survive-Alive-Thrive is a] riveting story and a moving testimony to God’s grace and presence when we need Him most. As someone who has found lasting hope in my own personal walk through the valley, I have been greatly encouraged by Mark’s story of triumphing amidst tragedy. I wholeheartedly agree that we find true joy by helping others through their struggles, as we have been helped through ours. This is a powerful book I encourage everyone to read!”

[Survive-Alive-Thrive] is so powerful and moving I wish it had been required reading in my grief counseling classes in seminary! Personal and touching, Mark blends his inspiring story with useful, actionable suggestions for those going through the healing journey. Friends with whom I have shared my [advance] book did not want to give it back. It’s on my library bookshelf and will continue to be an important resource to others providing encouragement, insight, and inspiration. What a blessing.”

Mark’s testimony of God’s peace in the midst of one of life’s greatest storms is not only inspiring but affirming. One of God’s greatest promises is that regardless of whatever this life throws at you [He] is in the center of it, ultimately leading to a joy-filled life. I can’t recommend this book enough. I laughed, I cried, and, in the end, I was filled with hope. You can’t put a price on that.”

Mark weaves brilliantly his own story of loss and grief into insights on personality and worldview theory, life experience with trauma, and family of origin factors. In doing so he moves us from weaker applications of linear grief work to a more holistic view of the process of finding joy in loss. What makes this more than abstract theory is Mark’s own journey of Survive, Alive, and Thrive.”

From: CHAPTER-3:

SURVIVAL MODE

“It was during these times that I depended most heavily on my relationship with Jesus Christ. He assured me that He was with me, that He loved Victoria, that she was safe with Him, and that I could trust Him. When I wasn’t sure of anything else, God wouldn’t let me forget that He was my friend. Talking with God gave me the sense and comfort that He knew the answers and would reveal them in time. While I did not get direct answers to all my questions, more importantly, He was present, patient, and loved me no matter the grief I was experiencing. He wasn’t a cosmic puppeteer pulling all the strings; He was my Lord and a friend who understood what I was going through and had promised to walk through it with me.

His grace inspired me to try to walk in a way that would honor my wife’s memory. I don’t believe that I could have made it through without His presence.”
